AMAZING DESK & CHAIR TRANSFORMATION

Give tired and dated furniture new life with this easy-to-follow DIY Furniture Flip –
Amazing Desk & Chair Transformation video by Paint Expert DIY and DIY with Elle.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS DIY FURNITURE FLIP:

From Plascon Paint Expert:

  • 1L Multi-surface Primer (or pink wood primer)
  • 1L TradePro Gloss Enamel – Black
  • Paint Effects Waterbased Glasecoat

From Hamilton’s Brushware:

  • Supa Soaka protective mat (made from recycled material)
  • 80-grit sandpaper
  • Sander’s block
  • Paint scraper
  • Paint Specialist fibreglass brush 50mm
  • Masking tape

Other materials used:

  • Orbital sander
  • Orbital sanding pads – 60 grit to 220 grit

HOW TO:

STEP 1: SANDING & PREPARATION

Lay down your Hamilton’s Supa Soaka mat.

Secure your sandpaper to your sanding block and sand down the hard-to-reach areas and curved surfaces of your desk.

Use your paint scraper to remove any damaged veneer, making sure that the wood underneath is sound.

Sand down your tabletop using your orbital sander.  Ensure you remove all the old coating and any marks or blemishes.  Start with a rough grit (60 grit or so) and work your way up in increments until you get to 220 grit.  This will provide a lovely smooth and flawless finish.

Top Tip: Sand in increments from lowest to highest grit to achieve a smooth and flawless finish

Wipe down the furniture well, ensuring that there are no dust particles left behind.

STEP 2: PRIME

Shake your primer, open it, and stir it well.

Tape off any areas you are not planning to paint. So if you’re planning to keep some parts plain wood, tape these off so you don’t get primer or paint on them.

Use your Hamilton’s Specialist Fibreglass Brush to prime all the areas you want to paint.

Allow adequate drying time for your primer.

STEP 3: PAINT

Once your paint is properly dry, you can apply your first coat of paint.

Top Tip: Don’t overload the brush.  Rather apply multiple thin coats than try and put the paint on too thick.

Read the guidelines on the paint can and ensure you allow adequate drying time between coats.  Solvent-based paints generally take much longer to dry than water-based paints.  It is important to allow your paint to properly dry to avoid defects in the finish.

In this video, Elle is using TradePro Enamel, which is a solvent-based product.  Elle has chosen this product as she wants to achieve a very high gloss finish.

STEP 4: SEAL THE DESKTOP

Elle has used Plascon Paint Effects Waterbased Glazecoat to seal her wood top, but you can also use a Plascon Woodcare product in order to get a higher gloss finish with a durable surface.

STEP 5: CLEAN UP

Once you’ve finished painting, clean your brushes, roller and tray thoroughly using Polycell Brush Cleaner.

Expert Tip: After you’ve cleaned your Hamilton’s brushes, wash them with normal dishwashing liquid and then rinse.  This will extend the lifetime of your brushes and ensure they are fit for future use.

Ensure the lid is fitted nice and tight on any leftover paint.

Expert Tip: Boost the longevity of your paint by applying plastic wrap around the opened area of the can and then hammer on the lid.

ENJOY YOUR NEW DESK
