Upgrade your kid’s bedroom on a budget with this easy-to-follow Painted Houses wall design by Paint Expert DIY, DIY with Elle and Hamilton’s Brushware.
Elle built the wooden bed herself (head over to her YouTube channel to watch the video on that) and coated it with Plascon Interior Ultra Varnish in Teak.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THE PAINTED HOUSES WALL DESIGN:
Elle uses Plascon Easy Living and Plascon Polvin water-based paints to achieve this look, tinted to the following colours:
- Grape Soda (P5-B1-2)
- Powdered Fern (G5-C2-2)
- Pear Fantasy (Y5-B2-1)
- Stardust (B5-C2-2)
- Cinnamon City (O4-C1-3)
Elle also uses the following Hamilton’s Brushware products:
- Ensign 50mm brush
- Supa Soaka protective mat (made from recycled material)
- Perfection Velour Rollers & Trays
- Viva 3-piece brush set
- Masking tape
- Measuring tape & pencil
- Spirit level ruler
HOW TO
STEP 1: PREP
- Lay down your Hamilton’s Supa Soaka mat.
Top Tip: Using masking tape, tape the mat to the skirting to ensure no spillage on your floor and skirting boards.
- Using your tape measure, mark off straight lines for where you want the house/building shapes to be. Use your pencil to mark off your lines and your spirit level ruler to ensure your line is perfectly straight. Make your buildings various heights and shapes, with different style roofs, chimneys, etc to add interest. This is the part where you can really get creative and have a lot of fun.
- Tape along the line with masking tape, ensuring your line is absolutely straight. This will help you achieve that perfect, crisp finish.
STEP 2: PAINT
- Shake your paint, open it, and stir it well.
- Use your Hamilton’s Perfection Ensign Brush to cut in around the edges of your colour block work area.
- Once you’ve finished cutting in, pour your paint into your tray and load your Velour roller. Roll the paint onto the wall in even strokes, beginning at the top and working your way down to the bottom.
Top Tip: Remember to maintain a wet edge so that the paint blends well and you avoid lap marks. A wet edge is when you ensure that the last roll of paint does not dry before you overlap it with the next.
- Allow your first coat to dry and then apply your second coat, again working from top to bottom.
STEP 3: REMOVE THE TAPE
- Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Be sure to pull the tape back on itself rather than towards you. This will ensure that you don’t get any paint bleed.
STEP 4: ADD THE WINDOWS
- You can go one step further and add windows for more interest and variation.
- Carefully tape off where you want the windows to be, and paint in the squares in white.
STEP 5: CLEAN UP
- Once you’ve finished painting, clean your brushes, roller and tray with water.
Expert Tip: After you’ve cleaned your Hamilton’s brushes, wash them with normal dishwashing liquid and then rinse. This will extend the lifetime of your brushes and ensure they are fit for future use.
Ensure the lid is fitted nice and tight on any leftover paint.
Expert Tip: Boost the longevity of your paint by applying plastic wrap around the opened area of the can and then hammer on the lid.
