Step 1: Clean and Prep your Patio
Mix your Polycell Sugar Soap according to the instructions on the pack. Using the Hamilton’s Wire Brush, thoroughly scrub and clean the surface. Hose off the area when you’re finished scrubbing, and allow to dry.
Step 2: Fix Surface Imperfections
Using the Hamilton’s Multi-tool Scraper and Polycell Mendall 90, mend any surface imperfections you can see. Once the Mendall 90 has dried you can sand the area flat and smooth. Remove any lose dust or other dirt.
Step 3: Prime the Patio
Once you’ve completed your sanding and cleaning you can prime the surface using Plascon Professional Gypsum & Plaster Primer (PP700). Use your Hamilton’s Professional Paint Brush 50mm to paint around the edges first. Once this is done you can use your roller to roll the primer on, taking care to start in the corner and work you way out (don’t paint yourself into the corner!). Use the Hamilton’s Epoxy Pile Roller as this is solvent resistant, so it’s perfect for use with this primer.
Step 4: Paint the base coat for your Painted Stencil Patio Makeover
Use Plascon Easy Living Roof & Paving in black as the base coat for your painted stencil patio. Just like with the primer, coat the edges with a brush and then roll the paint on from the corner outwards. Elle uses the Hamilton’s Professional Mohair Roller 225mm for this with their handy extension pole (a must-have!).
Following the instructions on pack, wait for the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat.
Top Tip: Remember to maintain a wet edge

Step 5: Prepare for Painting the Stencils
Using a chalk line and tape measure, find the centre of the room and ensure your line is absolutely straight before you mark off. This will ensure you achieve a seamless finish as you will work from the centre outwards with your stencils.
Step 6: Paint the Stencil on your Patio
Elle uses 2 identical stencils so that whilst the one is drying, she can paint the next one. Doing this will help you complete the project faster, although you can also do this DIY with just one stencil.
Use the masking tape to secure your stencil. Roll some paint onto your velour foam roller and remove the excess on a piece of cardboard before applying it to the stencil. Take care not to overload your roller. Overloading will result in the paint bleeding through the stencil and ruining your crisp finish.
Use the registration marks provided to ensure you line the next stencil up perfectly.
Once complete allow plenty of drying time before putting the patio into use.
You can seal your new stencilled patio for added longevity.
