STEP ONE – PREPARATION
As we all know, preparation is key!
Use Polycell Sugar Soap Powder to give the surface a good clean. The floor must be free of dirt as well as dust and allowed to dry before you start priming.
Polycell Sugar Soap Powder is a gentle yet effective cleaner. It is a multi-purpose cleaning agent suitable for household as well as industrial use.
It is not abrasive and will not scratch your surface.
Polycell Sugar Soap Powder helps with the removal of grease and grime (including crayon and ink marks) from paint film without attacking or destroying the paint film itself.
It is excellent for the removal of grease and grime off walls prior to painting.
It also serves as a degreaser and will remove surface contaminants from previously painted floors as well as cleaning of tiles in kitchens, bathrooms and showers. Over and above this it will remove surface contaminants and chalking from roofs as well!
It is a fabulous general household cleaning agent, including sinks, basins, floors, etc. – it even cleans drains!
STEP TWO – PRIMING
Elle uses Plascon Multi-surface Primer in this step.
TOP TIP: Never skip the primer – a primer serves to seal the substrate, hide joints and seams and provide a consistent surface for your topcoat.
- Open the primer and remember to mix it thoroughly before application.
- Pour your primer into your paint tray and start applying primer to your cleaned floor from the innermost corner
- Use your Hamilton’s Velour Mini Roller to apply primer to the smaller edges and surfaces
- Use your Hamilton’s Professional Paint Brush to get into the hard-to-reach corners
- Remember to use your Supa-Soaka absorbent fleece mat to prevent drips of paint from marking other surfaces
- Make sure all your surfaces are properly coated before moving on to the next step
- Allow your primer to dry for 24 to 48 hours before applying the topcoat
TOP TIP: Cover your Paint Tray with a plastic bag for easy clean-up and second use with other paint!
Plascon Multi-surface Primer is a water-based primer that provides good adhesion (important for a painted floor!).
It may be overcoated with a wide range of topcoats such as alkyds, vinyl and water-based types, but two-pack polyurethanes, epoxies and nitro-cellulose lacquers are not recommended.
It can also be used on suitably prepared plaster, wood, galvanised iron and PVC.
This product is ideal for use over appropriately cleaned specified surfaces to provide good adhesion for paint systems.
TOP TIP: When painting the floor of a space remember to start in the innermost corner.
The Hamilton’s Velour roller is great for smaller spaces and as it has ultra-fine velour fibre it eliminates bubbling during painting.
The Hamilton’s Mohair roller has a high-quality natural wool blend with a short pile resulting in less paint splatter on surfaces. This roller is also virtually lint-free, which is great for a seamless finish!
TOP TIP: Cut in the edges of your surface first, using a small brush and roller, before rolling out the larger flat surfaces.
STEP THREE – APPLYING THE FIRST COAT OF FLOOR PAINT
Open and stir your floor paint and decant it into your paint tray (handily clean from your clever use of the plastic bag trick yesterday).
As with the primer, start with the edges and corners with your small brush and roller and then work your way outwards from the inner corner, applying the paint with even strokes.
TOP TIP: Use the Hamilton’s Extension Pole to easily attach to the end of your paint roller to make the work of painting the floor a cinch!
STEP FOUR – APPLY THE SECOND COAT OF FLOOR PAINT
After your first coat is dry, follow the steps above and apply your second coat of floor paint.
Plascon Floor Paint is rapid drying and can be overcoated within four hours, allowing you to apply two coats in one day.
TOP TIP: Surfaces that work best for floor paint are medium to rough porous surfaces. Avoid painting highly glossy and very smooth surfaces.
STEP FIVE – CLEAN UP
All the above products are easily cleaned using water.
TOP TIP: Remember to clean all your tools straight after use to avoid the paint drying on them and ruining them!
NEW LOOK
It is amazing how changing the floor and a couple of accessories can bring new life to a tired old space!
